Unit 29 - Purpose of music videos

Music videos are how artists represent themselves to the industry. When an artist first introduces themselves to the music industry they will dress a certain way or act a certain way because this is how they are showing who they are and what they want people to see them as. This is their image that would make them unique from others and shows the world. However, over time an artist can change themselves. Sometimes it's for the best and other times it's not so much as they can start doing things that end them up in jail. An example, of this, is Miley Cyrus. The picture below shows a picture of Miley when she was first introduced to a picture now of her.

When she was first introduced to the world she was known as 'Hanna Montana' on Disney channel. Through the years she became very famous for her role as 'Hanna Montana' that many girls adored. After 'Hanna Montana'. However in 2012 Miley had cut all her off and dyed it blonde while also having a trademark tongue sticking out of her mouth. This was after her split from her boyfriend where she changed her image and her songs.

Miley Cyrus started to become more reckless and different. It's been said that she went out of control which has made her parents worried for her as she has been seen taking drugs. For example, in 2013 she started smoking weed on stage at the 2013 EMA. In 2014 she has even posted pictures of herself smoking weed and has even been caught by paparazzi. She has been told that she's wild and has gone out of control. However, now that she has gotten back together with her boyfriend it has been said she has calmed down. 

Synergy 


This is when two companies work together to promote linked products. By making a song about the movie it allows both the movie and artists to get recognition. 

For example, if people haven't watched fast and furious 7 they will go to the cinema and watch the movie or even watch the whole franchise if they haven't seem any. It also makes a greater target audience for the film. This is because both the film and the artists are able to gain a larger range of customers, by benefitting one or another. This will also benefit both the artists as if they like the song they will look the artist's other songs. 



Extension of outlets 

Some music artists will use all different outlets to promote their music videos. They could use different outlets such as video channels, online music sites, stores to sell their CD's and DVD's with all of their music videos and songs are on. They would try and promote their music because by promoting their music,  their videos they will get more money and they will also be able to have a bigger budget for when it comes round to making another music video. They will also get more recognition by more people as this lets them get a wider audience. 

Some examples are; Youtube, 4Music, Viva, MTV, and HMV. These try where people can go to listen to music and find out more. An example of this would be 4music. Every day they will host the official UK top 100 singles/songs chart where they promote new videos artists have released. Having these outlets allows the audience to be up to date with the music that is currently trending or even let th
em hear new songs by their favourite artist or listen to the new artist making them happy about the new songs or listening to new people. 



Another outlet that people use when music is released is downloading. This will benefit us the as we get to download and listen to the latest songs. However, it can be bad for the record companies as it means low sales. Fewer labels would want to sing new songs or even sign new people. This would cause fewer songs to come out from artists as all their hard work is being wasted. 









Major, independent and unsigned record labels. 

Independent record labels

An independent record label or indie record label is a record label that operates without the funding of major record labels. Many bands and musical acts begin their careers on independent labels.Indie labels often face an uphill battle trying to get their music heard, as they typically have far fewer financial resources to promote their music than major labels do.

Unsigned record label

An unsigned artist, unsigned band or independent artist is a musical or a music not under a contract with a record label. An example of this is 'please listen to my demo.' This goes very well with an unsigned as this is where an unsigned band or unsigned artist will start when wanting to get their music noticed.

The major record labels are:

- Universal music group
- Sony music 
- Warner music group

Above me are the major record labels that major artists or well-known ones would be signed too. An artist being signed to these benefits both the record label and the artist as the record label have a lot of money to spend helping the artist have their own concerts, more music videos and would allow the record label to make more money.
